0.2% decrease in the grocery retail trade

A preliminary report of the National Statistics Institute(NSI) shows 0.2% decrease in the consumption of food, beverages and tobacco products in February 2012. The retailers, apart from the ones in the automotive sector, notice a decrease in the sales. There is 2% decrease compared to January 2012.

The decrease is most notable (14.7%) among the retailers of household appliances. There is an increase only in the sales of pharmaceutical and cosmetic goods with the modest 0.5%.

On an annual basis, the results are similar. Compared to February 2012, there is an annual decrease of 6.4% in the retail trade. There is 0.1% decrease in the turnover of food, beverages and tobacco products. The results seem to be the worst for the retailers of clothes, shoes, fabrics and leather goods with the whopping decrease of 25.7%. Only the pharmaceutical and cosmetic products show an increase of 10.4% compared to February 2011.
