Food bank donated over 30 tons of food

The Bulgarian food bank was opened 2 months ago and has already donated over 30 tons of food to people with very low standard of living in the country. The total value of the donated expired food is 130 thousand lev, announced the executive director of the bank Marina Brakalova in August.

The Bulgarian food bank already has its own storehouse, which is situated close to Elin Pelin. It is used to preserve dry foods, cooled dairy and meat products.

The food bank provides about 2000 people with very low standard of living with food products on a weekly basis. Retailer chains and suppliers donate food to the bank, but the donators are still not enough. The newly created institution reminds that the issue with VAT payment on the donated foods is not decided yet. “Bulgaria is among the 15 EU countries, in which if the producer wants to donate food products which have not yet expired, he is obligated to pay VAT on them. That is why most of the producers still prefer to wait till the expiry date of the product and then to throw it away, rather than donate it.” comments Marina Brakalova.
