
Slovak consumers last year mostly preferred to shop for foodstuffs in hypermarkets and small independent groceries, according to GfK. For 30% of the respondents, hypermarkets were in 2012 the main place for foodstuffs shopping, followed by small groceries for 28% of the respondents. Supermarkets were identified as the main destination for foodstuffs shopping for 24% of Slovaks; discounters - for 13% of the respondents.
For shoppers in Slovakia, it was not only the broad assortment of goods and friendly prices mattered the most when they chose the place for their foodstuffs shopping. Increasingly, proximity became a major criterion for Slovaks when choosing the place to buy foodstuffs.
The survey also found that 90% of Slovaks purchased a private labelled foodstuff product. Occasionally, some 41% of Slovaks bought such products, while 36% of the respondents purchased private labelled foodstuffs on a regular basis. Private labelled foodstuffs were mainly preferred last year by people in smaller towns and by households with lower incomes. The GfK survey canvassed 1,000 Slovaks aged between 15 and 79 years.
